Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to develop speaking, reading, writing and listening skills at the intermediate Level. The basic study material is the coursebook New English File Intermediate supplemented by various additional materials.Throughout the semester students will be encouraged to link theory in the classroom to practice at schools via practical tasks. At the end of the course students are going to be able to a) discuss everyday topics; b) communicate in everyday situations; c) read and listen to authentic texts at the Intermediate Level and d) communicate in the language fluently.
Syllabus
  • The basic study material is the coursebook New English File INTERMEDIATE (Student's book and Workbook), see Literature bellow. The syllabus includes Units 4 and 5, the focus is on speaking and listening activities and development of students' vocabulary. • 1st lesson: Placement test, Introduction • 2nd lesson: Unit 4A - First conditional and future time clauses; Education • 3rd lesson: Unit 4A - First conditional and future time clauses; Education • 4th lesson: Unit 4B - Second conditional, Houses • 5th lesson: Unit 4B - Second conditional, Writing (Describing a house or flat) • 6th lesson: Unit 4C - Usually and used to; Friendship • 7th lesson: Unit 4 Practical English - A visit from a pop star, revision • 8th lesson: Unit 5A - Quantifiers; Noun formation • 9th lesson: Unit 5B - Articles (a/an/the/no article); Verbs and adjectives and prepositions • 10th lesson: Unit 5C - Gerunds and infinitives; Work • 11th lesson: Unit 5C - Gerunds and infinitives; Writing (Formal letters and CV) • 12th lesson: Unit 5 Practical English - Meetings • 13th lesson: Written Test • Exam period: Oral exam

Assessment methods
Requirements: Maximum number of points per semester: 200 Pass mark: 140 (part of this sum is also the final written test, students must obtain at least 70% for this final test - if not: two resits of the final test are offered) Written test: 80 points Oral test: 60 points (students gather points that are added to the total sum of points, oral tests do not have resits) Placement test No. 1: 10 points Progress test: 10 points.
