- Prerequisites
- The goal of the course is to provide students with a basic overview of the discipline, give them an idea of the goals and tasks of social education, about various fields of theory and practice, about its relation to different target groups, mainly groups with a social disadvantage. Students will learn about the development of social education and compare it to other examples of practice in Europe. They will gain knowledge of the practical applications of social education in schools and will become acquainted with methods and forms influenced by various forms of social-eduactional thought, culture and societal development. Interesting forms and methods give it great creative potential and enable it to enter various areas of social-educational activities. Social education is a science which focuses on numerous forms of help on the level of prevention and activation.

- Course objectives
- Define social education in terms of its development and present state (Poland, Germany, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, etc.), become acquainted with the interdisciplinary nature of social education in relation to theory and practice (influence of other disciplines), importance of various directions and disciplines for effective practical application. Demonstrate knowledge of the role that the environment plays in the activation of an individual (environment pedagogization), grasp the axial dimension of the discipline, understand the basic historical development in European countries, list people who defined and practised it including their notable works. Compare the development of social education in Europe and the USA. Demonstrate knowledge of the broad spectrum of target groups and options of their activation (socially disadvantaged groups, leisure time, adult population and its activation).
- Syllabus
- 1. Social education as a scientific discipline, its interdisciplinary character, cooperation with other disciplines. 2. Social education in Europe and the world (Poland, Germany, Slovakia, the United Kingdom, USA, …). 3. Methods and forms of social education, links with leisure time education, options of work in extracurricular education and leisure time education. Target groups of social education (children, adolescents, adults, specifics of socially disadvantaged groups, activation of seniors, minorities, migrants). 4. Influence of the environment on an individual’s development, typology of environments. The importance of the environment on an individual’s development, pedagogization of the environment. Social educator at school, options for work. 5. Social educator in school practice. Work options for social educators in schools. Cooperation with the teacher and other school employees. 6. Social education focused on socially disadvantaged groups, shared context with social pathology and social work. Definition of socially disadvantaged groups, inclusion and integration as understood by social education. Project planning in social education. 7. Diversity in schools, work with pupils’ “otherness”. 8. Axiological dimension of teaching, education towards values as part of the teaching process.
