Course objectives
After the completion of the course the student should be able to analyze the text from the aspect of language and stylistics, interpret the stylistic theory, understand it and apply it in the communication process, and communicate in and linguistically and stylistically correct way.
Syllabus
  • 1. Stylistics and language culture, style of text and culture of communication. Stratification of Czech - Standard Czech and other non-standard (colloquial) formations, official and unofficial communication. 2. Stylistic analysis of various stylistic spheres, especially basic functional styles, primary and secondary styles, overlapses in styles. 3. Style / stylistic errors, language, style / stylistic and communication standards. 4. Working with texts, their stylistic analysis, confrontation of texts of different styles. 5. Stylistic differentiation in communication. The stylistic value and its dynamics, the existence of stylistic competitors. 6. Proper selection of means of expression, in particular, language accuracy and style adequacy of expressions with respect to the function, purpose and intent of communication and other styling factors. 7. Substitution of language resources in text, formulation of text. 8. Transforming the text into another style sphere; spoken and written texts, prepared and spontaneous, monological and dialogical, public and private, etc. 9. Most common stylistic errors and deficiencies of our communication - working with texts. 10. Styling and compositional editing of written texts, language mistakes and stylistic / style flaws. 11. Evaluation of own production of texts according to the choice of themes, style / genres and style 12. Language and stylistic analysis of texts.

Teaching methods
Seminar: A seminar, active analytical students work in the analysis of texts, active synthetic students work in the interpretation of linguistic phenomena, discussion about the professional course issues, class discussions. Homework.
Assessment methods
Oral exam with the prerequisite of succesful passing of the written part. The content of the written test is given by thematic areas of disciplin comprising approximately 15 teaching tasks. Student must correctly solve 70 % of them. The prerequisite for the students to sit the oral part of the examination is to pass the written test. On the oral exam, the student draws from about 15 test circuits published at the beginning of the semester. The final mark is a summary of the written and oral exam scores. If the student completes the written part of the exam, but the oral examination no longer repeats the oral part in the given examination period.
