Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge of the terms in demography, Geodemography and social geography. - Be able to work with the selected school world atlas and the Czech Republic. - Be able to work a computer with ArcGIS, Excel, Word and web browsers.

Course objectives
The course is devided in two separate disciplines of human geography - population geography and geography of settlements. Population geography is the first sub-discipline of socio-economic geography and promote knowledge of the distribution of population and settlements in a complex geographical space. The Aim of Course: On the basis of the general recognition of geography of population and settlement at the Earth, its factography and its methods - to gain 1) the ability of aimed acquiring of new concrete knowledge of the dealing theme and 2) the ability of synthesis of the said knowledge within the complex framework of developmental relationship of partial geographical spheres - with emphasis on the problem of didactics transformation. At the end of course students should be albe to use informations in regional geography, interpret of basic informations in structure of people.
Syllabus
  • The Fundamental Themes of Course: 1. Geography of population and settlements as scientific discipline - methods of research, literature. 2. Number of population, location, population density. Development of population, screening, prognosis of population. 3. Population dynamics, population processes. 4. Natural reproduction of the population (basic demographic characteristics, global problems of population development, population theories and laws, population policy). 5. Migration and other forms of spatial mobility of the population (the main directions of migration in the Czech Republic, the main features of international migration, migration motivation, geographical mobility as regionálnětvorný process). 6. Demographic revolution, demographic regionalization. 7. Analysis of population base, population structure. 8. Population theory, population policy, population laws. 9. Global problems of population, man as creator and consumer of material values. Geography of settlements: 10. Geography of settlements, subject, research methods and literature. 11. Forming of residential units and settlements in space and time. 12. Urban settlements, emergence and development of cities, definitions and conceptual definition of the city, features and facilities of cities. 13. Rural settlement, the definition of rural settlements, the physiognomy of rural settlements, genetic and morphological and functional classification. Seat of a temporary nature. Syllabus of exercises: During the course students to do 4 (5) exercises. Contents of exercises is as follow: 1. Sources of information, methods of statistical evaluation of input data. Statistical Yearbook of the Czech Republic, Internet information. Comparing statistical data on population at the local, regional and national levels. Output -> Excel file. 2. Demographic characteristics of the residence place. Processing of statistical data on the place of residence using the benchmarking method, ie. Data comparison with other settlements near their place of residence and drawing conclusions. Output -> Excel file with the data base and graphic parts. 3. Concentration of population in the region. Lorenz curve, coefficient of Gini and heterogeneity index. Output -> Excel file and Cartogram processed in ArcGIS 10.4 Geography selected fourth seat. Settlement characteristics of the place of residence. Determining the morphological and physical structure of the place of residence. Analysis of strategic policy documents in place of residence. Output -> Word file. Alternative exercise: 5. Demographic characteristics. Structure of the population by selected characteristics. Output -> Word file.

Teaching methods
The course is going trought the lectures (1 hour per week) from basic demographical and settlement terminology and trought the exercises (1 hour per week).

Examination - written exam based on literature, lectures and the exercises.
