Course objectives
The purpose of this lecture is explaining some crucial phenomena of the lexicology: lexicology in the linguistic system, fundamental terminology (word, word meaning, a relation between form and meaning). The students acquire information about semantics, onomastics, phraseology, geographical and social stratification of the vocabulary, about using the lexicons. On seminary, the students also train lexical analysis.
Learning outcomes
After the lecture, the student will: - understand the dichotomy of lexicon and grammar; - the student will know the relation(s) of lexicology to other linguistic disciplines; - the student will know lexicological, or lexicographical terminology; - the student will be able to enumerate particular meaning relations between lexemes; - the student will know all the vocabulary layers; - the student will understand selected trends in vocabulary development; - the student will understand the practical use of the acquired knowledge in practice.

  • 1. Lexicology in the linguistic system. 2. Inter-disciplinary lexicology. 3. Lexical semantics (semantic theories, models). 4. Component analysis. 5. A relation between the form and meaning of the word (synonymy, polysemy, antonymy). 6. Development of the Czech vocabulary. 7. The tendency in the development of the Czech vocabulary.

Teaching methods
Teaching is based on the methods of critical thinking, analysis, synthesis, etc.
Assessment methods
Type of teaching: lecture. The student prepares a worksheet for her/his future teaching. The exact instructions for the elaboration of the worksheet will be given in the IS in the study materials. The successful completion of the subject requires both the worksheet mentioned above and the application of knowledge in the following seminar and a student’s study of literature.
