Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with a coherent insight in the relationship between a language and a society followed by its application to didactics of a particular foreign language, or even to a research which doctoral students carry out while working on their dissertation.
Syllabus
  • The aim of the course is to provide students with a coherent insight in the relationship between a language and a society followed by its application to didactics of a particular foreign language, or even to a research which doctoral students carry out while working on their dissertation. Different concepts of the use of language in the society will be used as a theoretical basis, depending on its history and culture. Topics to cover: • models of language interaction in society; • language varieties and their development; • formation and functioning of languages such as "lingua franca, creole and pidgin"; • language as a code, diglossia, bilingualism and multilingualism; plurilingualism; • use of language in the formation of identity, in relation to gender questions, and as a tool of power; • language policy and language planning depending on culture and society.
