- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to understand the history of the European music of the 19th century and to learn the main compositions and compositors of this period.
- Learning outcomes
- The student will get an overview of the history of music in the period of Romanticism at a level that will be sufficient for teaching the subject Music education in primary and secondary schools. The student will then
- distinguish the music of Romanticism from the music of other style periods on the basis of his listening experience;
- know the important composer of Romanticism and recognize their chosen core compositions while listening;
- have an overview of the framework of historical and social conditions in which the music of Romanticism originated;
- be able to prepare a set of suitable, qualitative and listening attractive music samples for his future pupils and students in the subject Music education at elementary and secondary schools - Syllabus
- Romantic music. Characteristic of the Romantic period and of his musical language.
- Early Romantic composers - Weber, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Chopin.
- Program music, program symphony, symphonic poem, Gesamtkunstwerk - Berlioz, Liszt, Wagner.
- Absolute music and program music in the late Romantic Era (1850-1910) and in the 20th century - Brahms, Dvořák, Tchaikovsky, Franck, Bruckner, Mahler, R.Strauss, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff.
- National schools (Russian, Czech, Scandinavian, French).
- Romantic opera especially in Italy (Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi, Puccini) and France (Boieldieu, Auber, Berlioz, Meyerbeer, Gounod, Bizet, Charpentier).
