Course objectives
The objective of the course is to introduce the issue of stressful, threatening and crisis situations so that the students are able to think about this issue in context and understand the risk and protective factors of mental health in stressful, threatening and crisis situations.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the students will:
- Have a profound understanding of the psychological correlations of stressful, threatening and crisis situations in the life of an individual,
- Be able to use the knowledge for preventing or mitigating these situations.
Syllabus
  • Content of seminars:
  • 1. Load, stress, trauma;
  • 2. Traumatization, acute reaction to trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder;
  • 3. Crises in the family. Marital crises. Family and divorce. Divorce and post-divorce situations;
  • 4. Child education in the family. Problems associated with inappropriate family conduct;
  • 5. Mental deprivation and its implications;
  • 6. Syndrome of a maltreated, abused, or neglected child;
  • 7. Family and disease. Family and intellectual disorder. Family and addictive behaviour;
  • 8. Family and prevention of violence;
  • 9. Death of a family member, bereavement. Death of a parent;
  • 10. Psychological assistance in stressful, threatening and crisis situations. Crisis interventions;
  • 11. Threatening and crisis situations in relation to accidents, natural disasters, etc.; first aid (pre-medical);
  • 12. Knowledge of personal safety as an effective tool for the prevention of threatening situations.

Teaching methods
The course is delivered in the form of seminars, presentations and discussions on selected topics; throughout the whole term students shall work on a selected seminar paper.
Assessment methods
A precondition for successful completion of the course is submission and presentation of a seminar paper.
