Course objectives
Students learn the principles of physiological (organogenetic) and functional phonetics. They will learn the basic terminology and understand the position of phonetics and phonology to other linguistic disciplines. They will understand the basic principles of pronunciation and spelling. They are able to categorize different types of speech defects and identify errors in pronunciation. They will understand differences between spoken and written form of language communication.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to: - describe the phonetic and phonological system of a standard, cultivated form of the Czech language. - clarify the basic phonetic and phonological terms. - recognize typical pronunciation errors and speech defects. - explain the principles of orthophony and orthoepy. - characterize the inventory of vocal phonemes and true consonants, sounds and gliding sounds. - describe the syllabic structure, the division of continuous speech, and the variation of the pronunciation of phonemes in continuous speech. - work with phonological alienation in Czech, pronounced words and understand the connection between the audio and graphic pages of the language.

  • 1. Basic concepts of phonetics and phonology. Position of phonetics and phonology among the other linguistic disciplines. 2.Correct pronunciation and spelling. 3.-4.Physiology and analysis of speech. Errors in pronunciation and speech disorders. 5.-7.Sounds, articulation and classification of sounds. 8.-9. Segmentation of fluent speech. Variations of pronunciation of phonemes in fluent speech. 10. Phonological strangeness in Czech, pronunciation of loan words. 11.-12.Principles of graphic recording of speeches.

Teaching methods
A lecture combined with subsequent discussions on the specilized issues of the subject. The discussion will cover the topics listed in the syllabus. Preparation of phonetic transcriptions.
Assessment methods
For a successful completion of the course, the students should complete a written test that will cover the topics discussed in the lectures. Students must obtain at least 70 % of points. The test will include (without theoretical topics) some ortographical tasks, phonetic transcription and clasification of Czech sounds. Part of the evaluation is also the elaboration of a short summary according to the teacher's instructions.
