- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able: aquire basic concepts, methods and rules of literary criticism and textology. Students write their own mock review and use the method of critical reading to assess reviews in daily press as well as professinal journals. They will be able to analyse and interpret a literary text using the form of a review and a literary-critical study.

- Syllabus
- 1. The organization and conditions of the course. Introduction of course related literature. 2. What is and what isn’t criticism and why it exists. Genres and forms of literary criticism. 3. Reviews. Types of reviews. Examples of reviews, ones formally acceptable and unacceptable. 4. Typology of critical approach to text. 5. Analysis of a selected review from a professional magazine. 6. Analysis of selected reviews from daily and professional press (comparison of different responses to the same book). 7. Comments on the development of literary criticism in the 19th century (examples). 8. Czech literary criticism in the 20th century (key events). 9. Introduction into textology: relationship between textual sources. 10. Introduction into textology: publication of critical text. 11. Editing text for publishing as a final phase of editorial work. 12. Evaluation of seminar works: so-called practice reviews.

- Teaching methods
- Form of course: seminar, homeworks, text analysis. The seminar is linked to text analyses and a subsequent discussion of the topics presented in the course.
- Assessment methods
- Student must responsibly prepare for individual seminar, and successfully submit a so-called practice review (including submitting it before an agreed-upon deadline) in order to receive their credit. Students demonstrate their knowledge of genres and forms of literary criticism and their ability to write a review on the level of a national daily newspaper.
