Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to deepen the physics course with a focus on education. The course will provide the expansion of knowledge necessary for the correct understanding and interpretation of phenomena used in everyday life and orientation in physical science and research.
Knowledge: Basic understanding of physics applications. Link to technologies used in everyday practice.
Skills: Be able to identify the origin of selected physical phenomena and explain the behavior of materials and diagnostic methods in practical applications. To be aware of the physical essence of events and properties of materials around us.
Attitudes: Awareness of the deep relationships between basic physical laws, the structure of matter and their importance for today´s civilization.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, learners should know and be able to:
By deepening knowledge of the basic concepts and laws of physics in relation to the structure of matter and selected properties determined by them
- identify the basic laws of phenomena, processes and applications related to the structure of matter and its properties.
- interpret the basic properties of substances in terms of physical principles and the influence of microscopic parameters on the observed macroscopic behaviour of substances.
Syllabus
  • The structure of lectures and practical examples is organized into 3 thematic units, which highlight the importance of applied physics in the world around us, or in technical applications. The individual blocks then contain sub-topics that broaden and deepen the knowledge necessary to realize the fundamental importance of applied research for technology and the challenges of contemporary society.
  • Block 1: Materials and their properties
  • Functional materials, composite materials The importance of surface properties of materials, refinement of materials Preparation and characterization of thin films Thin films in application: optical, mechanical, electrical Nanomaterials: properties, opportunities and threats
  • Block 2: Fundamentals of energy systems
  • Nuclear energy: fission and fusion energy sources, current trends Renewable energy sources: photovoltaics, wind power plants RES and energy storage/transport issues: batteries, green hydrogen, infrastructure
  • Block 3: Selected chapters from application practice
  • Modern light sources: solid-state, plasma (LED/LASER, discharge lamps) Magnetics and superconductors: transport, energy, diagnostic devices (e.g. in medicine) Challenges of physics in relation to climate change: modelling, adaptation, resilience
