- Course objectives
- Having met the course requirements, students are able to explain basic trends and changes of so-called intentional literature for children and young adults from its beginnings to the present. They will be able to use their deeper knowledge of thematic sets and relate them to history of Czech literature in wider context of other kinds of art.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the students will be able to explain the basic tendencies and changes of the intentional children’s and youth literature since its beginnings until the present times in the context of the development of the national literature. They will gain deeper understanding of selected topics regarding the history of Czech literature as well as the wider context of literature and art.
- Syllabus
- 1. The development of Czech literature, forms and periods of Czech literature. 2. Older Czech literature as a part of European literature developlment, specific features of Czech literature, the extent and importance of its study for primary school teachers. 3. Humanism, Renaissance, baroque. 4. Main questions of Czech culture and science in the period of National revival, main phases, the beginning of the literature for children and youth. 5. The folklore, folklore genres, adaptations. 6. Czech literature in the second half of 19th century, important authors. 7. The situation in the beginning of the 20th century, publischers, literature for youth. 8. Specific features of Czech literature in the first half of 20th century, transformations of genre structure. 9. The development of Czech literature during the second world war and years 1945-1948. 10. Literature for children and young adults in the 1950s and 1960s. 11. Literature for children and young adults in the 1970s and 1980s. 12. New literary trends in the 1990s and intentional literature for children and youth in the present.

- Teaching methods
- Type of course: lectures. Methods: theoretical preparation, explications combined with subsequent discussions on the professional issues of the course
- Assessment methods
- Completion: credit. Requirements: written thesis about one chosen theme. Themes - given in the start of semester - concern all periods of literary development from the beginning to the present. The written work consists of main features and trends in the national literature plus the position and features of literature for children and young adults in the period in question.
