Course objectives
The subject provides some additional information on linguistics, linguistic subjects and linguistic bohemistics.
The targets:
1. Improvement and fixation of the fundamental knowledge of the linguistic disciplines.
2. Fixation of the knowledge of the linguistic terminology that is required for the next studying of language.
3. Demonstrating language resources/tools (especially electronic) and explaining how to use them in language teaching.
4. Get to know the linguistic journals.
Learning outcomes
It is presupposed that student is able after ending the course:
1. to distinguish and describe the linguistic e-resources and to use them (in language teaching);
2. to distinguish linguistic disciplines and to explain relationships among them;
3. to explain the grammar categories and other linguistic terms (phone, phoneme, word, word categories, sentence, compound and complex sentence...).
4. to explain the categories and terms of the special linguistic disciplines (etymology, dialectology, onomastics, rhetoric…) and of the interdisciplinary linguistic fields (for example of psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics…).

  • 1. Language and linguistics.
  • 2. The structure of the language. Language levels and language elements (phoneme, morpheme, lexical units, sentence, clause). Grammatical categories, grammatical relationships.
  • 3. Grammatical categories of substantives, adjectives, numerals, pronouns.
  • 4. Grammatical categories of verbs.
  • 5. Phonetics and phonology. Sound phenomena of language. Phonemes, sounds of speech.
  • 6. Orthography. Orthographical principles. Types of Orthography.
  • 7. Morphology. Grammatical concepts. Word classes and function of them.
  • 8. Syntax. Elements of sentence, compound sentence and complex sentence.
  • 10. Lexicology. Vocabulary. Words, multiverbal units, phrases.
  • 10. Word-formation. Terminology.
  • 11. Stylistics. Functional styles, style procedures of forming texts.
  • 12. Linguistics journal. Linguistic handbooks (dictionaries, grammars).

Assessment methods
To finish the course successfully the students have to write a short composition (minimum: 3 pages A4) - reflexion of some theme of the lecture. It should be handed in one week before finishing the examination period.
