Course objectives
The lecture introduces different aspects of German vocabulary and the main areas of research in lexicology. It focuses on the features of lexical units, their mutual relationships and on stylistic values of words/lexemes. A contrast to the Czech, Slowak and English and the importance of acquired knowledge for teaching ​​are presented consistently throughout the lecture.
Learning outcomes
After successful completion, the student can:
- describe the vocabulary system;
- recognise and analyse exical units in a German text and compare them with other languages;
- explain the role of lexicology, word formation and stylistics in teaching.

  • Lexical (lexem x lex x word)
  • “Lexicological” units (phraseme as a special case of lexeme, “onyms”)
  • Nomination (new coinage, sematic derivation, borrowings)
  • Word formation as a Nomination
  • Compounds, derivations, abbreviations and clippings
  • Gender by word formation
  • Diminutives in Czech, German and English
  • German proper names, problematic fields in learning
  • Stylistic stratification of the German word stock: horizontal (regional) and vertical aspects
  • Stylistic stratification in dictionaries

1) Written test: at least 5 points required for the oral part of the examination.

Please follow the interactive sylaby for the combined study and continuously review all materials, complete the assignment as instructed (from class to class), complete all (also optional) ROPOTs, and participate in the discussion forums if set up. The PC test may be taken on an alternate date, the date of the oral exam will be set individually after return from the study stay.

In order to master the material and succeed in the exam, we urgently recommend enrolling in NJ_G411 Exercises in Lexicology and Word Formation, in which the presented material is practically discussed and there is room for discussion.

Support for learning and self-reflection for combined learners takes place during regular contact hours. Outside of these times, learners have the opportunity to contact the tutor at any time via e-mail or MS-Teams.
