Prerequisites
The course introduces basic issues of education of individuals with special education needs. It describes the field of the special education discipline, its classification, terminology, specifics of attitudes and methods in special education. Its relation to social education is emphasised. Students experience the practice in selected facility, which they visit and learn about its aims and specifics of work with handicapped people.

Course objectives
At the end of the course the students are supposed to: • explain the position of special education in pedagogic and helping professions. • define basic interest of the discipline and possible attitudes to individuals with special educational needs • understand the specifics of particular handicap and possibilities of education
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to: 1) to distinguish basic theoretical concepts in special pedagogy 2) will be oriented in special pedagogical disciplines
Syllabus
  • • Special needs education as a scientific discipline. Its principles and position in the scientific disciplines system. • An outline of historical development of special education. Current situation and trends in care of disabled people in our country and abroad. Legislation. • Classification of special education, basic terminology (integration, inclusion, socialization, rehabilitation), diagnostic and therapeutic methods. • Methods of special education. Complex rehabilitation care. Handicapped person´s personality and their family. • Counselling system in special education. School counsellor, Pedagogical-psychological counselling, Special education centres, Education care centres. • Education of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Subject, terminology, classification of intellectual disabilities, aetiology, characteristics of particular types of intellectual disabilities. Autism. Aetiology, symptoms and education of individuals with autism. • Education of individuals with physical disabilities. Classification of the physical disabilities, central and peripheral palsy, deformation, malformation, amputation, types of central palsy, minimal brain dysfunction, epilepsy, allergy, asthma. The issue of education of individuals with physical disabilities. • Ethopedics. Subject, basic terminology, classification of behaviour disorders and their characteristics, care of an individual with behaviour disorder, overview of the facilities, preventive educational care. • Speech therapy. Aetiology, classification of the disabilities, system of speech therapy care in the Czech Republic. Alternative and augmentative communication. • Education of individuals with hearing disabilities. Aetiology, classification of the hearing disabilities, hearing prosthetics, cochlear implants, complex care of the people with auditory impaired, specifics of education of pupils with hearing disabilities, school facilities for auditory impaired pupils. • Education of individuals with visual disabilities. Discipline classification, terminology, classification of visual impairment, aetiology, system of special education care in the Czech Republic. • Combined disabilities. Definitions, rehabilitation classes, special schools, basal stimulation. • New therapeutic approaches in care of handicapped people. Hippotherapy, canistherapy, music therapy, art therapy etc. • Importance and position of leisure time in a life of a handicapped individual. Interrelation of special and social education. • Social educator, leisure time educator, teacher´s assistant in special education facility. Qualification, possibilities.
