Course objectives
This weekly debating club will be entirely students' creation. In other words, a series of non-teacher-centred sessions where students are welcome to air their views on a variety of controversial issues of postmodern life. Discussions will be conducted by volunteer students with responsibility to prepare a week ahead readings related to the topic (newspaper articles, videos, reviews, statements, statistics, etc) to give participants basic information and allow them to respond to the material. As a result, students should not only enhance their fluency in English but also learn to paraphrase, listen to other people's ideas and, in turn, to communicate their ideas more cogently and effectively.
Syllabus
  • Suggestions for topics are welcome. Tentatively, they could include Abortion; Death of God and Rise of Irrationality; Like Vampires -- lives of gay and lesbian people in Czech society; Animal rights; Multiculturality: 21st century challenge to Czech xenophobia, etc.
