Course objectives
Students get acquainted with critical moments of French literature history from the classicist period until the end of 19th century. Emphasis is given at understanding the continuity and rightfulness of the literary development in the French and European literary context. Proper attention is also given to the historical context. Reflection of selected texts is presupposed. At the end of this course, students should be able: to differentiate individual literary styles of the given period; to categorise them chronologically; to compare them reciprocally.

  • 1. Drama in the French classicism period. 2. The most prominent personalities of the Enlightenment period. 3. French romanticism – periodization and main representatives. 4. Flaubert and Zola – realism and naturalim.
