Course objectives
Bilingualism is a complex phenomenon which can be analyzed and described from many different perspectives. At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- define what bilingualism really is,
- explain under which bilingualism arises and is maintained,
- assign different cases of bilingualism to the appropriate categories,
- estimate the consequences of bilingualism for the corresponding individual and society.

  • - Introduction to the principles of scientific description,
  • - Defining bilingualism,
  • - Multidimensional definitions of bilingualism,
  • - A short excursion into Psycholinguistics,
  • - The simultaneous acquisition of two languages from birth,
  • - Discussion of the so called sensitive period in language development,
  • - Society and bilingualism (domains, diglossie, and language change),
  • - Language and identity: ranking of core values in group identity and the position of language in it,
  • - Code-Switching: different frameworks to explain the data,
  • - Attitudes and their consequences,
  • - Experiences from immersion programs
