Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to enlarge and systematize students insight into the theory and research in the teaching profession, with the emphasis on the specific nature of foreign language teaching.
Syllabus
  • Modern pedeutology which has been developed since the 20th century as an independent field of education and which for the last twenty years, reflecting changes in the society, has made dynamic progress, deals in a complex way with goals, means, prerequisites and conditions of teachers professional activity. It is transdisciplinary - besides pedagogy it draws upon the field of pedagogical and social psychology, sociology and sociology of education, philosophy, antropology, ethnography etc. Relating to its focus and character as well as to cultural and political specifics of its development in different cultures, one of its features is its paradigmatic plurality which also determines the choice of research approaches, methods and techniques. The course tries to emphasise the exploratory and explanatory functions of pedeutology. The main objective of the course is to enlarge and systematize students insight into the theory and research in the teaching profession, with the emphasis on the specific nature of foreign language teaching. The course aims at the students whose dissertations deals with foreign language teacher education and with teaching profession. It offers them a broader pedeutological context of the topic of their disseration thesis. Topics to cover: Pedeutology as a theory of the teaching profession; concept of the teaching profession viewed diachronically; professionalisation of a teacher. Professional teachers competence, knowledge base of teaching, pedagogical content knowledge, teachers professional skills, teachers professional thinking, teachers concept of teaching, concept of quality in teaching. Professional development and its facilitation, preservice teacher education, key concepts used abroad, situation in the CR; teachers personality in teacher education;in-service teacher education. Teacher and teacher education as a subject of educational research; trends in research abroad and in this country. Foreign language teaching and its specific nature.

Assessment methods
Credit requirements: students critically evaluate at least two foreign studies related to the field of theory oŕ reasearch in the teaching profession (e.g. from the journals Teaching and Teacher Education, Journal für Lehrerinnen- und Lehrerbildung etc.) and defend at least partly elaborated project of pedeutological research (as a basis of their dissertation).
