Course objectives
This course introduces students to the work of an outstanding personalities, of the main tendencies, theories and approaches of Czech literary theory and criticism developed in exil during the 20th century. At the end of the course the students will: be able to understand the historical, theoretical and methodological development of Czech literary theory and criticism in exil; know the key works of Czech literary critics and formative relations of Czech literary theory and criticism in exile in the given period; get better appreciation of the main changes undergone by Czech literary theory and criticism − in the context of the development of Western literary theory and criticism. The aim of the subject is to outline the main changes in the development of Czech literature theory and criticism during the 20th century (with the inner differentiation in three exile waves: 1939, 1948, 1968). The emphasis is put on the historical and the theoretical development of Czech literary theory and criticism, on the key works of an outstanding personalities, as well as on short surveys of historical and social context.

Teaching methods
Students will use and develop their knowledge of the key works, literary trends and tendencies in Czech literary theory and criticism in the given period during lecture. They will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more effectively. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Course completion: Written examination (written test). Exam requirements: required reading, hand in a written assignment, satisfactory results of a written test.
