Course objectives
Students will explain the basic principles of communication with the foreigner. They understand the concept of intercultural sensitivity and are prepared to improve oneself in this respect. Students understand the specifics of communication with the pupil-foreigner and an adult foreigner. They acquire the basic knowledges about verbal (spoken and written) and non-verbal communication with a foreigner.
Syllabus
  • 1. General principles of communication with foreigners. 2. Intercultural sensitivity - theory and practice. 3. Specifics of communication with pupil-foreigner. 4. Specifics of communication with an adult foreigner. 5.-6. Non-verbal communication - cultural universality and specifics (pictograms, means of paragliding, body language - mimics, gestures, proxemics, haptics, visual contact, etc.). 7.-8. Verbal communication - written (ways of addressing etc.). 9. Verbal communication - spoken; giving information and instructions. 10.-11. Problem topics and taboos in cultures. 12. Different perceptions of cultural specifics.

Teaching methods
Lesson type: seminar. Lecture parts, class discussion, simulation of model situations.
Assessment methods
Preparation of a report (to one of the selected sub-areas of the topic of communication with a foreigner). Practial presentation and subsequent analysis of model communication situation.
