Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: - to interpret the stylistic theory and understand it, - to explain the most important linguistic styles, - analyze the text, - communicate linguistically and stylistically correctly.
Syllabus
  • 1. Developing of the stylistic terminology. The main features of Czech stylistic development in the 20th century. 2. Relation of stylistics to the related scientific branches. 3. Communication and types of texts. Theoretical and practical studying of the style differentiation of the Czech language in connection with the incidence of stylistic factors. 4. Characteristic features of the selected basic functional styles, spheres of style, style levels of the linguistic devices and style standards, objective and subjective styles. 5. Temporary spheres of style and dynamism of the functional styles. 6. Constant and variable (contextual) style values in sequence to a specific text. 7. Composition of the text, structuring of the text (vertical and horizontal). Cohesion and coherency of texts. 8. Modification of the stylistic techniques in connection with the selected stylistic fragments. (e. g. essays, reports, feuilletons and others).

Teaching methods
Lesson type: seminar. A seminar, active analytical students work in the analysis of texts, active synthetic students work in the interpretation of linguistic phenomena, diskussion about the specialized course issues. Class discussion, presentations projects.
Assessment methods
Subject is finished by colloquium. Credit requirements: Written test in the end of the term (practical exercises). The test includes approximately 20 short questions focused to elementary language phenomena. To be successfull student has to answer 80 % of them.
