Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to explain the history of historiografy since the Elightenment till the present, i. e. in the 19th and 20th centuries. It put historiography into wider political, cultural and epistemological contexts. < One of the most important objections of this course is to bring the students to the knowlege that historiography is not only a scientific discipline, but also a kind of human intellectual activity, a way how to understand world.
Learning outcomes
The student is able to explain the basic development of the history of world and Czech historiography from Enlightenment to the present.
Syllabus
  • 1. History of the Early Middle Ages 2. Historiography of the Middle Ages from humanism to the Enlightenment 3. The beginnings of scientific historiography during the Enlightenment 4. Basics of Revival Historiography (F. Palacký) 5. Liberal and conservative historiography of the second half of the 19th century 6. The beginnings of positivistic historiography in times of critical and social realism (Goll) 7. Positivist historiography in the first decades of the 20th century (Pekař, Šusta, Bidlo, Nejedlý). 8. Positivist historiography between two world wars 9. Marxist historiography
