Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to acquaint students with current terminology and methodology of cognitive cartography research and with the development and research of cartographic and geoinformational literacy. Studies in the fields of cartography and geoinformatics, pedagogy and psychology will be presented correlated with the development of cartographic and geoinformational literacy.
Syllabus
  • Students will be acquainted with the issues of space perception and image processing, with basic divisions of cognitive cartography. A selected experiment in the field of cognitive cartography will be presented in detail with involvement of students in its model solution. Particular attention will be paid to cartographic skills in the context of visual literacy, cognitive development and spatial perception, and to the position of cartographic skills in curriculum documents. Outline: 1. Visual and mental perception of space and its informal and formal graphic depictions 2. Cognitive cartography, basic research directions, design of an experiment and its implementation. 3. Cartographic and geo-information literacy. 4. Cartographic skills in curriculum documents.

Assessment methods
Completion of partial tasks: 1. Writing a discussional text critically evaluating at least two research studies on a given topic (selected according to the teacher's assignment). 2. Compilation and presentation of a proposal of didactic transformation of a selected topic from the field of teaching cartography and geoinformatics at primary or secondary schools.
