Course objectives
The goal of this subject is mastery of stylistic theory as a prerequisite for perfect and functional communication. After completing the course, students are ablet to: (a) demonstrate knowledge of stylistic terminology and be able to interpret stylistic theory; (b) identify and characterize language idioms in their dynamics, esp. Functional styles; (c) identify the stylistic characteristics of the linguistic means; (d) perform linguistic and stylistic text analysis; (e) communicate in a linguistically and stylistically correct way.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to: - explain the stylistic theory and terminology. - explain the stylistic phenomena in their dynamism. -identify stylistic flaws and errors and suggest ways to remove them.
Syllabus
  • 1. The main thesis of the development of Czech 20th century stylistics, current stylistic research, stylistic research methodology. 2. The relationship of stylistics to related fields and disciplines. Stylistics and language culture. 3. Summary of the communication, the communication process and its phases. Style making factors and their influence on shaping the text style. 4. The types of texts from various aspects. Means of expression, language and compositional stylistic means. 5. Compositional structure of the text, vertical and horizontal structure, cohesion and coherence. 6. Stylistic procedures and stylistic forms / genres; modification stylistic procedures in connection with the selected styles and stylistic units / genres (essay, reportage, columns etc.). 7. Theoretical and practical mastery of style differentiation of the Czech language in connection with the operation stylistic factors. 8. Characteristics of basic linguistic styles, esp. of functional styles, the essence of their style sphere characteristic style layer of language means; stylish and communication standards. 9. Dynamics of functional styles, the diffusion and the formation of transitional stylistic spheres styles primary and secondary. Stylistic value. 10. Means of expression, stylistic value of linguistic means. Fixed and variable (context) stylistic value in a particular text. 11. Stylistic text analysis. 12. Trends in contemporary Czech stylistics.

Teaching methods
Lesson type: seminar - consultations, class discussion. A seminar, active analytical students work in the analysis of texts, active synthetic students work in the interpretation of linguistic phenomena, discussion about the professional course issues. Textual analysis, identification of the language phenomena in the text. Elaboration of stylistic analysis of text (entered or optionally).
Assessment methods
Subject is finished by colloquium. Credit requirements: Written test in the end of the term (practical exercises). The test includes cca 20 short questionsfocused to elementary language phenomena. To be successfull student has to answer 80 % of them.
