- Course objectives
- Czech literature of the second half of the 19th century represents a significant period of the history of Czech literature. The subject introduces students to the most significant personalities and works of the studied period, including also the cultural-social context. Students will get an insight into basic trends and movements of Czech literature in the period in question, as well as into the specific nature of their poetics. They will develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies.
- Learning outcomes
- After finishing the course, students will be able to:
- identify basic features of artistic movements of the given era;
- identify and analyze styles of important figures of the literary process in the give era;
- interpret the literary work based on their theoretical knowledge while taking into account the contemporary and cultural context of its creation;
- write an expert text reflecting on the selected topic of lectures;
- independently find and utilize further secondary sources on given topic. - Syllabus
- 1. Cultural and social situation at half of the 19th century. Anthology Máj and other anthologies of the period. 2. Rudolf Mayer. 3. Interpretation of Vítězslav Hálek’s poetry. 4. Not much famous Jan Neruda. 5. Sofie Podlipská. 6. Alois Vojtěch Šmilovský. 7. Václav beneš Třebízský. 8. Development of the Czech theatre in the 2nd half of the 19th century. 9. - Teaching methods
- In the form of lectures, students will get an insight into basic trends and movements of Czech literature in the respective period in question. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities, significant for that particular period. They will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
- Assessment methods
- Students will present outcomes of their work in written form which will help them to enhance their ability to think critically and develop their individual style. Emphasis is put on students’ ability to defend and formulate their views with precision and professional insight. The seminar will be concluded by a credit. Credit reguirements also contain a written reflection (about nine Word pages long) dealing with one of the topics covered in lectures, based on additional reference resources and fiction.
