- Course objectives
- Lectures follow the changes of the Czech and world co-temporary children’s and youth literature. After successful completion of the course, the student is familiar with the development of the children’s literature in the last quarter of the century regarding genres and thematic units, which also take into account the target demographic of pre-reading children.
- Learning outcomes
- After finishing the course, students will be able to: • - characterize individual genres of children’s and youth literature of the post-revolutionary era; • - analyze current trends in children’s literature; • - identify and analyze the production of important literary figures; • - connect the development of the Czech children’s and youth literature with general socio-cultural events.
- Syllabus
- 1. Forms of current children’s poetry, connections to the nonsense and playful genres of folklore poetry. 2. Song lyrics for children. 3. Current Czech narrative prose with a child hero. 4. Thematical untabooing in current Czech narrative prose with a child hero (the issues of racism, handicap, old age, illness, and death in very young children’s literature). 5. How the current Czech literature was influenced by world literature for children. 6. Folk tales and fairy tales as adapted for children. 7. Regionalism and children’s literature. 8. Co-temporary original fairy tale. 9. Picture book. 10. Structure of children’s magazines. 11. The roles played by of comics and drawn series as syncretic genres in the development of the interpretative activities of pre-reading child. 12. The dangers of trivialities and kitsch in children’s literature, the features of trivial literature in texts for very young children.
