Course objectives
The course is focused on the application of biology content knowledge to the everyday life in accordance with the principles of sustainable living. Lessons are held on the faculty model school garden (Kejbaly workplace)and Lipka School for Environmental Education in order to prepare students professionally and didactically for teaching key science and environmental concepts.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
• explain the principle and meaning of basic natural processes and systems enabling life on Earth on concrete examples;
• distinguish and correctly use technical and user terms from the field of biology, ecology and environmental studies,
• identify and characterize current environmental problems in the Czech Republic and at the global level,
• in the framework of activity learning to use natural products, natural and renewable materials both for deriving new concepts and for the development of creativity, artistic skills and aesthetic perception,
• use the outdoor environment as a means and an opportunity to meet the educational goals of not only science subjects
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic natural processes and systems enabling life on Earth
  • 2. Houseplants as representatives of selected world biomes
  • 3. Vegetables and their cultivation as an example of the life cycle of annual plants
  • 4. Herbs and ornamental spring plants as an example of the life cycle of perennial plants
  • 5. Current environmental problems of the Czech Republic
  • 6. Global environmental problems - climate change
  • 7. Fruit trees as a phenological indicator of climate change
  • 8. Field crops - the impact of agriculture on the landscape
  • 9. Objectives and methods of environmental education
  • 10. The potential of the outdoor environment in the context of environmental education
  • 11. Practice with teaching in the garden - group micro-performances with students
  • 12. Natural materials as a means to develop sensory and aesthetic perception
