Course objectives
Having met the course requirements, students will be well informed about literary history of literature for youth which makes an indispensable part of our national literature, especially in relation to the so-called readers´ authors, as well as to the current interpretation of their works. The course takes into consideration different levels of literary-historical knowledge which students bring from different types of secondary schools. Students are able to summarize their literary-historical knowledge in the context of Czech national history. They will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies.
Syllabus
  • 1. Czech National Revival, its characteristics; characteristics of artistic movements of the 19th century. 2. Eminent personalities of nationwide literature at the beginning of the Revival. J. Dobrovský and a codification of Czech, J. Jungmann and his work, A. J. Puchmajer, V. M. Kramerius, theatres of the period. 3. F. L. Čelakovský and echo poetry, romanticism in Czech literature. 4. Folk art and its adaptors and collectors. 5. Ethical works. 6. Girl hero prose, F. Doucha’s and F. Pravda’s prose. 7. Birth of children’s poetry – K. Vinařický and F. Doucha. 8. Reading for entertainment. 9. The 2nd half of the 19th century: social context, works by májovci, ruchovci and lumírovci groups. 10. F. Bartoš and his folklore programme, folk tales adaptations. 11. Birth of modern children’s poetry – J. V. Sládek, J. Kožíšek, K. V. Rais. 12. Prose about child life and girl hero prose, adventure fiction and historical fiction of the 2nd half of the century.

Teaching methods
Type of course: consultations. Through a set of selected topics students learn about änd discuss the methodology of literary science.
Assessment methods
To meet credit requirements, students have to write a test in literary history. The test consists of separately evaluated tasks (open questions), passmark is up to and including 2,9.
