Course objectives
The objective of the course is to present the knowledge about the area of social pathology, and the knowledge required for a deeper understanding of socially pathological phenomena in a psychological context.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the students will:
- Be knowledgeable about the issue of social pathology,
- Be able to understand the socially pathological phenomena in a psychological context,
- Be able to apply their knowledge in designing preventive measures in the school environment.
Syllabus
  • 1. Socially pathological phenomena. Basic concepts;
  • 2. Aggression in the family. Asymmetrical aggression and its deep psychological contexts;
  • 3. Aggression in the school environment. Psychological contexts and group dynamics of bullying;
  • 4. Xenophobia, intolerance, racism, racial violence. Prevention of xenophobia;
  • 5. Addictive behaviour and addiction. Forms of addictive behaviour;
  • 6. Risk and protective factors of addictions;
  • 7. Alcohol addiction. Development of alcohol addiction, types of alcoholism, implications. Alcoholism and the family. Prevention of alcoholism;
  • 8. Addiction to non-alcoholic substances. Emergence and development of addictions, typical manifestations of non-alcohol drug abuse, implications. Drug addiction and the family. Prevention of drug addiction;
  • 9. Pathological gambling, risk factors, emergence, development and social consequences of gambling. Preventive approaches;
  • 10. Crises in children and youth, common causes of crises;
  • 11. Assistance to an individual affected by a crisis. Suicidal behaviour, suicidal development of an individual and its typical features, warning signs for teachers and educators, prevention of suicidal behaviour;
  • 12. Possibilities and boundaries of general assistance to an individual affected by a crisis.

Teaching methods
Theoretical preparation, individual work on a seminar assignment; during the term (as per schedule) psycho-didactic seminars will be held including reflections, discussions, and commentaries.
Assessment methods
During the term students shall work on a seminar assignment, which needs to be finished and presented for proper completion of the course.
