- Course objectives
- At the end of the course, the students will be able: 1 – to name the main linguistic features of Czech in different periods of its development from the beginnings up to the National Revival ; 2 – to characterize the different orthographical/grammatical systems of Czech from the oldest periods up to the contemporary language.

- Syllabus
- 1 Study of the so-called external history of literary Czech language. 2 Literary languages on our territory before the origins of literature written in the Czech language. Latin and Old Church Slavonic literature The Chronica Bohemorum by Cosmas of Prague, Old Church Slavonic legends and others. 3 Czech in the 12th and 13th centuries. The first legal and literary texts. Graphic realization of the first Czech texts. Difficulties of the primitive orthography. 4 Evolution of Czech in the 14th century. Old Czech manuscripts and their stylistic differentiation. Vocabulary of the Czech language as a reflection of the social situation. Old Czech syntax. 5 Old Czech dictionaries. Klaret and his company. Vocabulary in Klarets dictionaries. Jan Hus and his contribution to the Czech language. 6 The advanced Czech language of the humanistic epoch, its stylistic differentiation. Syntactic characterization of the humanistic manuscripts. 7 Grammar works of the 16th century. The Grammar of Náměšť. Jan Blahoslav. Dictionaries. 8 The period after the battle of White Mountain and the problems of its evaluation. The so-called Baroque Czech, the Baroque literary manuscripts. The Czech grammar books of the 17th and 18th centuries. 9 J. Dobrovský and his linguistic work. Language codifications. J. Jungmann work. 10 Language codification in the period of purification of the 19th century. The so-called Matice Purifications. Creation of period special terminology. 11 The care of the literary language at the end of the 19th century and in the half of the 20th century (J. Gebauer, V. Ertl). The Prague linguistic school and its representatives. 12 Czech studies and their development in the second half of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century. The important representatives B. Havránek, A. Jedlička, V. Šmilauer, F. Kopečný, F. Daneš and others.

- Teaching methods
- Active analytical work of students with emphasis on understanding the function of the written language, its cultural and civilizational role, discussion of professional problems of the subject. Preference will be given to face-to-face participation in the online tutorial.
- Assessment methods
- To successfully complete the course, students must: 1. pass a written exam where students freely formulate answers to questions. 2.submit a seminar paper/report on the assigned topic. Detailed requirements are published in each semester in which the seminar takes place in the Course Materials in IS, Learning Materials folder.
