- Course objectives
- The course is conceptualized as an introduction to the study of literary genres. The course introduces students to the evolution and typology of literary genres.
- Learning outcomes
- Having completed the course, students will be able to interpret and analyse concrete literary pieces which represent individual literary forms, genres and genre variants.
- Syllabus
- 1. The basic concepts and bibliography concerning the subject. 2. The area of classification of literary forms and genres. 3. Lyric - genre variants. 4. Lyric-epic genres. 5. Epic - genre variants. 6. Epos – development, changes, characteristics. 7. Typology of a novel depending on the theme and aesthetic tendencies. 8. Typology of a novel depending on the artistic movement. 9. Typology of a novel depending on the structure of its composition. 10. Drama - tragedy, comedy, greek and roman theatre. 11. Drama - development, genre variants. 12. Changes of the absurd drama. 13. Post modern features in the drama. 14. Summary, examination.

- The lecture is linked to text analyses and a subsequent discussion of the topics presented in the course.
- Assessment methods
- Type of course: Lecture To complete the course, students are required to write a short essay which will deal with a selected genre variant in a creative fashion. When composing the text, students have to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the genre variant as well as their own analytical judgement.
