Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to create theoretical knowledge about sentence structure and semantics of sentences and the ability to use them in the analysis of sentences and later also in pedagogical practice.
Learning outcomes
It is assumed that at the end of the semester the student will be able to:
- analyze subordinate, coordinate and complex sentences;
- to determine the types of subordinate clauses and the relationships between the clauses connected in coordination;
- draw an area graph of the sentences with the relationships between the sentences marked.
Syllabus
  • 1st block: Connecting sentences in compound and complex sentences. Main and subordinate clauses, criteria for distinguishing them. Subordinate clauses and its types. Paratactic connection of sentences in a compound and complex sentence. The meaning ratio between paratactically connected sentences and the linguistic means of its expression. Paratactically connected main sentences, paratactically connected subordinate clauses.
  • 2nd block: Hypotactic relations in sentences and the means of their expression. Conjunctions. Classification of subordinate clauses according to clause validity. Complex sentences, syntactic relations in complex sentences. Types of complex sentences. Compound sentences with embedded clauses. Graphic representation of the structure of sentences.

Teaching methods

Assessment methods
The examination includes syntax of Czech language 1 and syntax of Czech language 2. Structure of the examination.
1. part: Written test in the end of the term; the test includes the theme of the course (see syllabus). The test is only practical and includes:
a) 30 - 40 test questions - student have to choice 1 correct answer from option;
b) analysis of sentences and compound or complex sentences.
To be successful the student shall answer 80 % of them correct. There are 1 proper term and 2 retakes for the students.
2. part: Oral examination. It includes theoretical theme of the course - see syllabus and http://moodlinka.ped.muni.cz/course/view.php?id=115. The student decides by lot two questions. The answers are evaluated according to the correctness and to the speech cultivation, too.
If the student does not pass the test successfully, the whole exam is classified "F" in that examination term.
If the student past the test successfully and fail to do the oral exam, he have to do the oral exam only on the retake.
