Course objectives
The aim of the course is to broaden the knowledge of the syntactic system of Russian, taking into account the similarities and differences between Russian and English, and to apply this knowledge in practical language; to provide knowledge of complex cases of punctuation. Emphasis is also placed on the translation of the syntactic phenomena discussed from Russian into English.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- explain the differences in the structure of Russian and Czech sentences;
- interpret the syntactic phenomena of Russian;
- practically apply the acquired knowledge;
- correctly use punctuation marks;
- use the acquired information to improve written expression in Russian.
Syllabus
  • 1. Word order in Russian. Comparison with Czech.
  • 2. Principles of Russian punctuation. Basic rules of using punctuation marks.
  • 3. Punctuation in sentences with loosely attached adjectives and prepositions.
  • 4. Use of conjunctions in subordinate clauses (if/li, что/чтобы).
  • 5. Punctuation when quoting in Russian. Rules for the use of punctuation marks.
  • 6. Combination of punctuation marks in a sentence.
