Course objectives
The planct is a medieval literary genre between literature, theatre and liturgy; the texts were either meant for silent reading or for theatrical performance during the Maundy Thursday, or were recited as a part of sermon. This functional syncretism mirrors in the structure and poetics of the texts that is considerably postmodern with its fragmentariness, intertextuality and intermediality, and formal fluidity, yet at the same time medieval thanks to its contents, metaphors and passionate devotion.
Students will first encounter the genre on theoretical grounds to be able to experience it, then, through their own bodies in workshop classes.
