Course objectives
The course continues and extends to a depth the basic course of qualitative methodology from bachelor study. Its aim is to deepen the competence of students in the field of qualitative methodology so that they are able to independently perform qualitative analysis of text, visual and / or audiovisual documents.
Learning outcomes
Students completing the course will be able to:
- to transcribe text (interview)
- perform various types of document coding (interviews, video recordings, product activities - especially drawing, biography, diaries, blogs, etc.) - categorize codes and search for relationships between them,
- perform document analysis according to the chosen qualitative data analysis technique (interpretative phenomenological analysis, grounded theory, narrative analysis).
Syllabus
  • The course will take place in thematic blocks: • Part I: Introduction to the problem, repetition of three of the qualitative analysis approaches (IPA, GTM, narrative analysis), the choice of approach and objectives of the practice analysis, obtaining data for the training analysis selected destination);
  • • II. part: Transcript: what is transcription, function and goals of transcription, different types of transcription (literal, annotated, etc.), procedures of transcribing an interview, practicing transcription of training data;
  • • III. Part: Coding and Principles Applicable across Designs: Snippet Creation, Comment Writing, Coding, What is Code, Code Functions in Qualitative Analysis, Code Types (in vivo vs vocational, grounded vs theoretical, organizational vs meaning etc.) code names and associated risks (quantity, generality, complexity, multivariate), relationship between research question and individual codes, interrelationships between codes, practicing training data coding;
  • • IV. part: Analysis and interpretation: categorization (list of codes, association of the same codes, creation of sub-codes), choice of central concept, relations between categories and map of concepts, skeleton of analytical story (argument line), formulation of theory (story), criteria of evaluation theory (credibility, originality, resonance, utility, measure of generality, etc.).
  • • Part V (optional): Presentation of the results: how to present the results obtained by the qualitative analysis procedures, how to write an article, the production and the mutual assessment of the training articles of the course participants.

Teaching methods
Teaching methods - lectures, study of literature, analysis of data materials (texts, videos, graphic products), discussion, analytical work on empirical data.
Assessment methods
Credit verifies the ability of students to apply acquired competences of qualitative data analysis in psychological research. The student describes the procedure and demonstrates partial steps of analytical work on concrete data.
