Syllabus
  • To get to know Africa a little better than we usually do is not only important in itself - it also means to acquire a deeper insight into the relations between Britain as a colonizer and its African colonies and to understand better the immediate effects and the long-term conse-quences of the colonial experience on both sides. This lecture-seminar course will try to approach some of the basic aspects of the complex history, present life condition and culture of Africa. After a short, introductory lecture, one of the students will lead a discussion of the home reading, related to the topic of the lecture. The home reading will be composed of short fiction and non-fiction texts by both African and non-African authors. Other individual tasks, requiring some research, will be fulfilled by other students to complete the basic programme of the course.
