Course objectives
The main themes of this course are the theoretical and practical study of articulation and acoustic features of Russian sounds in different combinations and positions, as well as the theory of phonemes from the standpoint of different schools of phonology. Throughout the course, aspects of modern Russian literary pronunciation are studied. A separate section includes the theory of graphics and spellings.
Syllabus
  • Phonetics and phonology of Russian (a lecture) Autumn term - general issues relating to the disciplines involved Phonetics, its issues. The position of phonetics among the disciplines dealing with language and speech. Spoken and written language, transcription, transliteration. Articulation of vowels and consonants. Acoustics of vowels and consonants. Modulation of continuous speech. Phonology, its issues. The position of phonology among linguistic disciplines. Segmental phonemes. Methods of identification of phonemes. Central and peripheral phonemes. Supragmental phonological phenomena.
