Course objectives (in Czech)
This is an introductory course in English lingustics. Its aim is to provide the students with the basic information about language and its functions, the levels of language, the scientific study of languages, the various disciplines of linguistics, as well as the characteristics of the English language - its past and present.
Syllabus
  • A preliminary list of lectures: 1. Linguistics and language 2. Language as a means of communication 3. Levels and functions of language 4. Word formation 5. Lexical semantics 6. English dictionaries (a guest lecture) 7. Variation in language 8. History of linguistics 9. History of English linguistics in the Czech lands 10. The English language over the ages (a historical overview) 11. The English language at present (and in the future)
