Course objectives
The twentieth century is sometimes considered as the second great era of English drama. The course will look at developments in British drama (and theatre) of the period between 1890 and 1945. The aim is to explore the generic, thematic and stylistic diversity of modern British drama as well as the features that make it largely distinct from the contemporary drama of continental Europe. We will read a number of plays in detail, covering the three types of drama of the era recognized by Christopher Innes as Realism, Comedy and Poetic Drama. Greater space will be given to the formative influence of G. B. Shaw. Each seminar will be devoted to the work of a particular dramatist.
Syllabus
  • Works of the following playwrights will be examined: Oscar Wilde, Arthur Wing Pinero, George Bernard Shaw, William Somerset Maugham, John Galsworthy, David Herbert Lawrence, J. M. Barrie, Thomas Stearns Eliot, Noel Coward, Sean OCasey, J. B. Priestley, Ben Travers, W. H. Auden & Christopher Isherwood etc.
