Course objectives
In the form of commented readings the course will introduce Benjamin`s project of the analysis of the prehistory of modernity. It will focus primarily on his works on modern culture Einbahnstrasse (1928) and Das Passagen-Werk (1927-1939). However, these will be situated both in the broader context of Benjamin`s corpus and the thought of his times (especially his relation to the Frankfurt School`s critical theory). It will also pay attention to the ways Benjamin`s work was received and interpreted throughout the twentieth century. Readings: Hannah Arendt, Introduction. Walter Benjamin 1892-1940.
