Course objectives
The French novel and its development in the Age of Reason. An analysis of the novel writing since the beginnning of the XVIIIth century up to the French Revolution, with regard to the esthetic thinking and literary theories of the time.
Syllabus (in Czech)
  • Francouzská románová tvorba XVIII. století bude analyzována v šesti okruzích: a) mravoliný román a tealismus (Chasles "Les Illustres Françaises", Le Sage "Gil Blas", Marivaux "La vie de Marianne","Le Paysan parvenu", Prévost "Manon Lescaut"). b) filozofie a politika v románu a povídce (Montesquieu "Les Lettres persanes",Voltaire "Zadig", "Candide", "LIngénu", Diderot "Le neveu de Rameau", Jacques le Fataliste"). c) sentimentální román a preromantismus (Rousseau "La Nouvelle Héloïse", Bernardin de Saint-Pierre "Paul et Virginie"). d) libertinský román (Choderlos de Laclos "Les Liaisons dangereuses", de Sade "Justine"). e) gotický (erný)román (Beckford, "Vathek", Cazotte "Le Diable amoureux").
