Course objectives
The development of Greek over space and time: dialectical articulation, style, diachronic developments examined in synchronic sections of specific periods; the origin of Greek speech sounds and their developmental trends through the classical period.
Syllabus
  • 1.Development of Greek in time and space; differences in dialectal, stylistic and diachronical dimensions; diachronic versus synchronic methodological approach.
  • 2. Phonetic inventory in Ancient Greek; a survey.
  • 3/4. The vocalic system of Ancient Greek; the IE. origin of Greek vowels and diphthongs and their Anient Greek development.
  • 5/7. The main phonic tendencies provoking the origin of new vocalic realizations (monophthongization of diphthongs, contractions, compensatory lenthenings).
  • 8/9. The consonantic system of Ancient Greek; the IE. origin of Greek consonants and their further Ancient Greek development (the plosives and the continuants separately) .
  • 10.The main phonic tendencies provoking the origin of new consonantic realizations (e.g., spirantization of plosives).
  • 11/12. Part of speech in Ancient Greek;analysis of the nominal categories (gender, number, case).
