Course objectives
The aim of this four-semester course of literary Chinese (wenyan) is to offer a systematic introduction into the study of language of Chinese classsical texts and to introduce a basic reading of classics, including the formal and content interpretation of selected texts, so that the students can continue independent readings of commented texts with the help of dictionary and reference literature. Part III is devoted to readings of selected texts of classic Chinese philospohers, historians and poets. Each text is analysed lexically as well as grammatically, and relevant aspects of life at the time of their origin are also discussed. Texts are again complemented by a range of excercises (independent translations from wenyan into Czech and from Czech into wenyan, questions and answers, interpretation of selected topics from texts). In certain cases, Chinese original text is compared to some of its authoritative translations.
