Course objectives
The seminar surveys the work of Thomas Mann to about the year 1912. We shall concern ourselves with selected texts (stories, essays, excerpts from novels and a play)in connection with important literary problems and the inspirational sources of Mann's work. Problems: the problem of the artist, fictionality of the literary text and its relationship to the real world, music and R. Wagner, the influence of A. Schopenhauer's and F. Nietzsche's philosophies on Thomas Mann's work, etc.
