Course objectives
The research seminar follows the lecture Europe and Hollywood (FAV091). We will engage in the history of exhibition and reception of Hollywood movies (and comparatively, Czech and Soviet movies) in Czechoslovakia 1945-1968. The first part of the two terms long seminar will focus on the period 1945-1953. We will try to find out the outcomes of culture-political changes for the Czechoslovak film industry and its import politics a practices of distribution; the process of establishing the mechanisms of censorship; the use of film criticism as a tool for discursive exclusion of Hollywood and West-Europe cinematography. The requirements for grading: 80% presence on the seminar; giving a research paper on a given topic; an active opposition to two students papers.
