Course objectives
The purpose of this course is to orientate students in the European and Czech art of the first half of the 20th century. At the end of this course students should be able to interpret important tendencies and works of this period.
Syllabus
  • 1. Beginnings of modern art. What is modern art.; 2. Primitivism, expression, coulour. Fauvism and expressionism. Munch and Czech Art.; 3. Fragmentation, object and space. Cubism: Picasso and Braque. Collage.; 4. Cubisme and cubismes. Futurist reconstruction of the universe. Cubism and Czech Art.; 5. The principe of reduction, abstract art: Kandinsky, Kupka, Malevich, Mondrian.; 6. Duchamp and the new concept of art.; 7. Art of the 20s: dada, "Neue Sachlichkeit". Constructivism. Bauhaus. Tradition and avant-garde in Czech Art: Devětsil.; 8. Surrealism, psychic automatism and chance.; 8. Art and society: "Entartete Kunst".
