Course objectives
This course will be devoted to the analysis and interpretation of Čapek‘s novels. We will deal with these works: Továrna na Absolutno, Krakatit, Hordubal, Povětroň, Obyčejný život, Válka s mloky, První parta, Život a dílo skladatele Foltýna. We will try to find the impact of his journalistic career on the form and content of his novels (mainly Továrna na Absolutno and Válka s Mloky). We will also examine the question of popular literature in the contex of these novels (Krakatit and Válka s mloky). We will also focus on the meaning and significance of Čapek’s trilogy. We will also confront the reactions of readers and critics to this work. We will concentrate mainly on the later ones. (ex. D. Mocná Čapkův Krakatit a populární epika /1994/, Dvě podivné „detektivky“ (Čapkův Hordubal a Jméno růže U.Eka) /2005/ or V. Papoušek Svět jako žurnál v Čapkově Válce s mloky /1994/). At the end of the course students should be able to follow the changes and developements of Karel Čapek‘s texts and analyse the themes, style and structures of his texts.
