Course objectives
The course is constructed as an introduction to the theory and methodology of literary interpretation. It mainly concentrates on critical analysis of elementary concepts in hermeneutics and on the comparison of the individual currents and tendencies in modern theory of interpretation. Primarily the cours deals with the most significant theories in hermeneutics of the 19th century (Schleiermacher, Boeckh, Droysen, Dilthey) and especially of the the 20th century (Heidegger, Gadamer, Ricoeur, Jauss, Derrida, de Man, Hirsch, Eco, Bloom, Rorty). The lectures are structured as historical overviews of the individual currents, their mutual connections and influences. These also provide the students with a wider insight into the development of the individual currents. After finishing the course the students will be able:
- to understand basic issues of literary hermeneutics;
- to understand the hermeneutic thinking in wider philosophical and literary theoretical contexts;
- to apply hermeneutic approaches to analyses of particular literary texts;
- to understand and evaluate primary and secondary sources available for the subject.
