Course objectives
Course is concentrated upon Czech painting and sculpture from 1890 up to the first half of XXth century. Student will be able to understand and interpret art-movements and trends of the early modern period.
Syllabus
  • Definitions of modernity; art experiments; main representants of the Czech modern art, especially painting; painting of fin-de-siecle in Bohemia and Moravia;
  • Generation of 1890', Art Societies and their influence on developement of the Czech modern art
  • Osma, Skupina výtvarných umělců, Tvrdošíjní, Děvětsil
  • Czech Surrealism.

Teaching methods
After teacher's presentation of the general and particular features of the subject, students are guided to interpretation of the chosen extracts, and class discussions follow.
